Many cities across China require regular COVID tests for residents to enter public venues. Local officials say such measures help protect people and boost economic growth at the same time. Xia Ruixue reports.

It's been nearly two months since the city of Wuhan, in central China's Hubei Province, started mandatory regular Covid testing. All residents need to take a PCR test every 48 hours. Those who don't receive a negative test result, will get a grey QR code and therefore be banned from entering public places or using public transportation.

Since May, the 48-hour time requirement has been extended to 72 hours.

XIA RUIXUE Wuhan "Today it's quite easy to take a PCR test in Wuhan. You can find a sampling station like this within a 10-minute walk. All of them are free of charge."

Shenzhen and Hangzhou have also launched mandatory regular Covid testing. So far, all these cities have been successful in identifying potential risks and reducing transmissions.

Local authorities say such policies have also helped boost the economy and domestic consumption. In Wuhan, for example, the catering industry has recovered more than 70% of its pre-Covid value.

KUAI QIANG Chief Economist, Jiang'an District Commerce Bureau of Wuhan "A new big department store opened during the Labor Day holiday, and more than 600,000 people visited during the 5-day holiday. Thanks to COVID-19 measures, they did not have to worry about the pandemic. It's really a big help and boosts the market."

PENG ZHIMIN Researcher, Hubei Academy of Social Sciences "Hubei posted a robust GDP growth in the first quarter of this year, that's 1.9% higher than the national GDP. Wuhan's Dongfeng Motor Corp also doubled its sales. These are all good news."

It's been more than two years since the COVID-19 pandemic started. China has been using various tools, including regular testing, contact tracing, centralized quarantine and big data to protect more than 1.4 billion people against the virus and secure sustainable and stable socio-economic development at the same time.

But the National Health Commission also says that unnecessary mass testing should be avoided and local governments should decide about the frequency and scope of testing campaigns based on local epidemic conditions. Xia Ruixue, CGTN, Wuhan, Hubei Province.
